3.x
If you are using ArcView 3.x, you will see that Import 71 is a program that
you can activate from the start menu.
- Click on "start", then drag your cursor across "programs",
then "ESRI", then "ArcView GIS", then down
to "Import 71" and click again. (If you downloaded
Import71 for use with ArcExplorer, you will probably have an
icon on your desktop that you can double click).
- Import 71 will ask for the export
file name (the name of your data layer file which ends in .e00)
as well as the output data source, which just means where you
want to put the resulting coverage. You can browse to the export
file and then browse to where you would like the coverage to
reside. You do have to actually type in the name of the directory
that the data will actually reside in in order for Import71
to process correctly. For example, if you want your data to
have the following path name "c:\maps\gisdata\airports\airports.pat",
you will browse your way to "c:\maps\gisdata\" and
then you will type in (in the Import71 window) "airports" after
that final slash.
- Now you can click on OK.
ArcView 8.x (ArcGIS)
If you are using ArcView 8.x (ArcGIS), you will need to open ArcToolbox.
- Click on "conversion tools,"
- Click on the plus sign next to conversion tools so that you
see "Import to Coverage" listed below
- Click on the plus sign beside that to see "ArcView Import
from Interchange File" and double click on that.
- Now you will be faced with a simple dialog box which asks
you to fill in the name of the .E00 file (navigate to it by
clicking on the file icon, then choose it and click "open" and
you will return to the dialog box) and the location/name of
the coverage you will be creating (navigate to where you would
like it to reside, then fill in a name for the folder it will
reside in, click "open" and you will be back at the
dialog box)
- Then click "OK." When the dialog box disappears,
your file is converted.
NOTE: If you download E00's from MSDIS on a regular basis you should consider
adding the "ArcView Import from Interchange File" option to ArcCatalog.

ArcExplorer
If you are using ArcExplorer, you will need to download Import 71 from the
ESRI web site (www.esri.com, then click on "free resources", then
click on "ArcExplorer Version 1.1 Import Utility"). Put it somewhere
sensible so that you remember where you put it! To activate the program,
simply navigate to it (or click on the shortcut) and double click. From that
point follow the directions in ArcView 3.x second
bullet above ("Import 71 will ask for…"). You will only
use this procedure (download data in .e00 format, use import 71 to turn it
into
a coverage, view with ArcExplorer) if you have ArcExplorer version 2 (windows
version). Version 4 (java version) only reads shape files.
