Data on MSDIS
We have improved the way data is dicovered on MSDIS primarily by the introduction of GeoPortal. There is one requirement for publishing your data in the GeoPortal – that each dataset be accompanied by its own FGDC compliant .XMLmetadata file. Please see the "Guide to Creating and Editing Metadata in ArcGIS for Publishing to the MSDIS GeoPortal".
The existing FTP download is being maintained and most data can be accessed directly via FTP. Alternativley, some data are discoverable via simple clickable maps, for example Census data. Most of the data files on MSDIS have been zipped for faster download time (zip help). Most modern operating systems come with embedded zip software which should be able to unzip any of the files available from MSDIS. Some large (file size) imagery data is now provided by web imagery service. Links to various data types with simple web page access are provided below:
