Trauma Centers - 2009
Location of trauma center hospitals throughout the state. Hospitals are designated as trauma centers when they are equipped to provide emergency medical services for traumatic injuries on a 24/7 basis. Trauma Centers have specialists on staff to deal with emergency resuscitation, surgery, intensive care etc. Trauma Centers are designated from 1 - 3, (I, II, III) with level I being the highest level of staff, equipment and specialists.
Previous versions of this trauma center layer contained hospital bed information that was irrelavent to whether a hospital was designated as a trauma center. This information has been removed for the 2007 edition. Trauma center information is maintained by the Missouri Dept of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) Bureau of EMS, a separate section than the Division of Regulation and Licensure, which maintains the other information about hospitals.
Geographic locations were originally created using Group One's Centrus Geocoder for ArcGIS, an extension purchased for the ESRI ArcMap product. Quality Control by Geographic Resources Center 8/11/2003 to refine locations provided from geocoding.
There were not changes to trauma center designations between 2008 and 2009. Some attributes (contact names for trauma center nurse and trauma director) and metadata were edited to reflect that this information is still current for 2009.

Hospitals - Table was joined to county boundary layer with a spatial join to check for correct county name provided in original data. Descrepencies were identified and corrected.

Hospitals - Data was copied to a new data frame with a Projection defined as Geographic Coordinates, NAD 1983. Temp file was moved to this data frame. Latitude and Longitude coordinates in table were updated using Hawth's tool Add XY to table and choosing the option to use the coordinates of the data frame.

A Level I trauma center has a full range of specialists and equipment available 24-hours a day and admits a minimum required annual volume of severely injured patients. Additionally, a Level I center has a program of research, is a leader in trauma education and injury prevention, and is a referral resource for communities in neighboring regions community outreach).

II
A Level II trauma center works in collaboration with a Level I center. It provides comprehensive trauma care and supplements the clinical expertise of a Level I institution. It provides 24-hour availability of all essential specialties, personnel and equipment. Minimum volume requirements may depend on local conditions. These institutions are not required to have an ongoing program of research or a surgical residency program.

III
A Level III trauma center does not have the full availability of specialists, but does have resources for the emergency resuscitation, surgery and intensive care of most trauma patients. A Level III center has transfer agreements with Level I and/or Level II trauma centers that provide back-up resources for the care of exceptionally severe injuries.
