Soils Digital Data Development

Process Description: Field maps were manually compiled on 1:24000 scale one-third quadrangle orthophotos in the 1927 North American Datum by field soil scientists. Mylar overlays of the soil lines were prepared from scribe- coats and scanned at a resolution of 300 dpi. Mylar overlays of the map unit symbols were scanned at 400 dpi. For Soil Surveys mapped on a one-third quadrangle base, four control points corresponding to the four corners of the one-third quadrangles were used for registration during data collection. For Soil Surveys mapped on a full quadrangle base, four control points corresponding to the four corners of the quadrangles were used for registration during data collection. The scanned soil lines were vectorized using Hitachi's Recognizer software in AutoCad (from AutoDesk). Recognizer was also used to perform optical character recognition (OCR) on the scanned map unit symbols. The line and text files were translated to DXF and imported into ARC/INFO. Arc Macro Language programs were developed to project, edge match, merge lines and text and error check the data within ARC/INFO. Paper check plots of each 7.5-minute quadrangle were compared to the scanned mylar source documents and checked against the published survey for accuracy. Errors in the digital material were corrected by CARES personnel. Errors on the source material were reviewed and corrected by NRCS personnel. These corrections were incorporated into the digital data by CARES personnel. Special features were 'heads-up' digitized over the scanned map unit symbol image in ARC/INFO. All data was translated to DLG-3 optional format for submission to NRCS. Process Date: 1996.

Attributes for the 1:24000 coverages were downloaded from www.statlab.iastate.edu:80/soils/nsdaf . The facility is the National Soils Data Access Facility located at the Survey Section Statistical Laboritory, Iowa State University.

These attributes contain many, but not necessarily all of the attributes found in the published soil surveys. This document will explain the attributes located in the attached infofiles

FILENAME LISTING

The '###' is replaced by the soil survey FIPS code. The fips code is similar to the Bureau of the Census Fips Code, but differs for surveys containing either partial or multiple counties such as the Mark Twain Soil Survey or the Greene-Lawrence Counties Soil Survey. A listing of Soil Survey FIPS Codes is placed at the end of this document.
